London has become known as one of the world’s most lucrative places to divorce a rich spouse, with judges having made a series of multi-million-pound awards to the estranged wives of much wealthier husbands. This has led the city to be dubbed the “divorce capital of the world”, a situation that has arisen in part because pre-nuptual agreements are not legally binding. Baroness Deech, chair of the Bar Standards Board, says the current legal system sends the message that “getting married to a well-off man is an alternative career to one in the workforce”.
