Renminbi notes in a fanChina’s tight regulatory controls on investments are a fixed point in the fluid world of fund management. So it will come as no surprise that its regulators are pretty suspicious about hedge funds, as a report in Monday’s FTfm explains.

The continuing strength of global equities in the face of several shocks to the world economy last week became more impressive, or more puzzling, depending on your point of view.

Emerging markets significantly outperformed their developed market counterparts, reversing part of their under-performance in the first few weeks of  2011. Several investment banks have now tipped the emerging markets as the right place to be if the developed economies slow under the weight of rising oil prices later in the year. But I am far from convinced about this.

Dilma Rousseff, Brazil’s president, will visit Beijing at the start of the week for discussions with Hu Jintao, a prelude to the Brics summit mid-week when leaders from Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa will join forces to discuss all things Brics-related.

The week will end with a flood of trade, unemployment and GDP figures, most interesting of which is expected to be China’s first quarter growth domestic product figure.
