Read blog, get politically active

Since you’re reading this, it’s not too much to assume that you’re interested in the blogsphere…

So you might want to know about a report - The online world - a new constituency - which comes out tomorrow. It’ll be posted on the website of a PR firm called Edelman.

Perhaps it is a little self-serving for a blog to write up this study. After all, it details the growing role of the medium. And yes, it can be tricky for a report to get the measure of these sorts of phenomena. Still, for what it’s worth, here are some of the core points:

  • Many "politically active consumers" who look at blogs claim to have taken action (signing a petition, attending a public meeting) because of something they read.
  • In the four countries that the study covers -the US, France, Germany and the UK - "what was once seen as the realm of techies and teens is now increasingly being used as an alternative way of accessing information".
  • The report showed that the following proportion of respondents read blogs each week: France 39 per cent; US 33 per cent; UK 27 per cent; Germany 23 per cent.

The study was carried out these four countries. In all, about 4,000 people were polled.
