Josef Ackermann’s intention to “globalise” the UK supertax on bankers’ bonuses within Deutsche Bank suggests that, in the short-term, the government may have succeeded in a tricky manoevre.

Logically, the British government should have applied the bonus tax only to UK-based banks – the ones that benefitted directly from UK taxpayer assistance in the financial crisis. Read more
