Checking out…
I am going to Tanzania to meet some chimpanzees. No Iowa, no New Hampshire. I imagine they will get along without me. See you on or around January 18th. Have a good Christmas.

Re Clive Crooks’s “Checking out”, I wish him an enjoyable holiday in Tanzania, but one might also hope that, in addition to enjoying the company of its chimps, he might have a comment or two to make when he returns about Tanzania’s 37 million people, some 20% of whom are estimated to be suffering from AIDS, and who live in a country that is still one of the world’s poorest, despite having put into effect a series of IMF induced market “reforms”.
China seem to be more aware than the west that Africa is not solely inhabited by chimps, but also has some 800 million people, who are struggling to share in the hoped for prosperity of the globalized world of the 21st century. Perhaps this is an observation that more western commentators might find instructive.
