- Ratcheting up the growing rivalry between Google and Microsoft, Google will join a European Union antitrust case against Microsoft that claims the company is stifling competition in the web browser market by including Internet Explorer in Windows.
- Microsoft filed a suit of its own, alleging that in-car navigation system maker Tom Tom is violating eight of its patents, including three relating to Tom Tom’s use of open-source operating system Linux. This is believed to be the first time Microsoft has filed suit over Linux, which it has repeatedly said violates its patents.
- The reorganisation at Yahoo is still a work in progress. All Things Digital is reporting that in the latest developments Marco Boerries, Yahoo’s top mobile executive, is out, with Hilary Schneider picking up some of that work as head of a new US division. Other winners include chief technology officer Ari Balogh, who will lead Yahoo’s product reorganisation, and Joel Jones, a contender to be chief of staff to new chief executive Carol Bartz.
- Less than a day after Gmail was hit by a two and a half hour outage, the free email service from Google was the victim of a phishing attack. The attack spread quickly through Google Chat, appearing as chat sessions from known acquaintances.
- Although Apple chief executive Steve Jobs was absent from the company’s annual meeting, he reportedly remains deeply involved with strategic decisions while on medical leave. Though the press was banned from bringing laptops or smart phones in, some investors posted live dispatches from the meeting.
