Seesmic acquires Ping and 50 social networks

Seesmic’s plans for platform  and social networking domination have been extended with the popular Twitter client announcing today the acquisition of Ping.fm.

Seesmic switched from being a video social software app and took on Tweetdeck in 2009 -  making its Twitter service available on Android, Blackberry, Windows, OSX and within a web browser.

The change in business plan was made possible by the acquisition of Twhirl. By adding Ping, users “can now update 50 social networks using Seesmic+Ping.fm from email, chat, sms, Blackberry, Android, web, Windows, OSX and much more soon,” according to Loic Le Meur, Seesmic’s founder.

That is a quantum leap in options, although most users are satisfied that they can post status updates just to Twitter and Facebook from such services.

The San Francisco-based start-up has seen more than 3.5m downloads of its programs and Ping brings 500,000 users to the combined service.

Ping is currently responsible for around 200,000 status updates a day and should help Seesmic to its target of 1m updates a day in 2010 from its service.

There are numerous clients doing a better job than Twitter itself in helping users monitor and organise tweets, but Tweetdeck and Seesmic have established brand leadership in this part of the Twitter ecosystem.
