Yahoo‘s new chief executive Scott Thompson has a long to-do list waiting for him at the troubled internet company, according to several reports. Bloomberg suggests that Yahoo is interested in acquiring the Weather Channel, WebMD and AutoTrader.com, according to an anonymous source, as part of a “tax-efficient asset swap” with Alibaba and Softbank.

Notch another win up for London’s Silicon Roundabout. Moo, the online printing service that was one of the first tech companies to set up shop on the Old Street interchange, has beaten international competition to strike a deal with Facebook to become the go-to site for making business cards out of its new Timeline profile pictures.

Apple has snatched Adobe media executive Todd Teresi to run its mobile-advertising business, Bloomberg reports. iAd has not been one of Apple’s greatest successes since acquiring Quattro Wireless two years ago but mobile advertising, while small, continues to grow apace. Apple has been no friend to Adobe in recent years, with the late Steve Jobs vocally refusing to allow its Flash web plug-in onto any iDevices.

With a slow start to the new year, much has been made of Rupert Murdoch’s arrival on Twitter. Within hours, his wife Wendi also appeared on the site, chatting away with Rupert and various celebrities, such as Ricky Gervais. Both accounts came with the little blue “tick” logo that Twitter uses to indicate it has independently verified the account is who they say they are.

Except Wendi was a spoof. She de-cloaked this afternoon with the following tweets:

Cyberthieves have cost US companies and their banks more than $15bn in the past five years, the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation found in a recent study.

Yet regulators say banks could have prevented most of the crime if available security software had been put in place. New US guidelines directing all banks to increase security came into effect this week, designed especially to help protect commercial accounts. But as 2011 drew to a close they had not yet fully sunk in or convinced banks to raise the bar against criminals as needed, regulators warn.

Soundcloud, the Berlin-based “YouTube for audio”, has raised $50m at a $200m valuation, Mike Butcher of TechCrunch Europe reports. Silicon Valley venture firm Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers led the round, giving an early boost to the European tech scene’s prospects for 2012, with Berlin in particular tipped for great things this year.

Apple’s top designer, Jonathan Ive, has been knighted in the Queen’s New Year’s honours list for raising the standards of industrial design and championing British talent abroad.

Raised in north-east London, Mr Ive – known as Jony – has been the design mastermind behind Apple hardware ranging from the iPod, iPhone and iPad to its iMac and Macbook computers.
