Lessons from Nestle’s coffee break

Nespresso

I got a Nespresso coffee machine for Christmas this year and I have written an FT column about it. You can read it here and post comments below. Happy New Year.

  1. Your reference to iPod/iTunes was quite apt. Both Nespresso and iPods have a knack of locking the initially enthusiastic consumer into both the machine and the product. Both look good and feed into our need to ‘plug and play’.

Both, however, ultimately restrict choice for the consumer through this degree of vertical integration.

  2. From a business/investors point of view, I think you’re spot on and clearly Nestle are on to some kind of winner.

You mention that it takes time to create a winner, no doubt true, but i’m sure Nestle have a lot to thank Starbucks for. For better or worse, they’ve reinvigorated the global coffee trade.

But, I have yet to taste a pod made coffee that is anywhere near as good as using a proper espresso machine. Again it goes back to good things come to those who wait. It might take a bit longer than simply sliding in a pre-packaged pod of coffee, but having the freedom to use any coffee you want, means you can find the perfect cuppa.

  4. One further comment to display the superiority of Nespresso machines; unlike the other home single-serve coffee machines, it doesn’t try to reproduce foamed milk using a pod (horribly over-sweetened), ruining the coffee made by the sub-standard pod anyway!

I LOVE my Nespresso, after 18 months, it hasn’t lost the novelty it had when I first used it.
