The top 10 Northern Rock losers

northern-rock.jpg

My Financial Times column this week is about Northern Rock. It sets out, David Letterman-style (well, sort of) the top 10 losers of the affair. You can read it here and post comments below.

  1. The proud position of the first place of the top ten losers list should have gone to the citizens of UK in general and the UK taxpayers in particular. None of the entities in the list are going to lose as much as the UK taxpayers. The others willingly participated in the fiasco, not the general taxpayers. They had no way of knowing and/or approving Northern Rock’s business model. But they will be forced to fork out at least £100 billion actual money which does not grow on trees like the credit created out of thin air by Northern Rock as all other banks do too. From where will Mr Darling get the £100+ billion? Mr Gapper, please show some appriciation for the contribution of the commoners, the actual creators of real wealth. Without their contribution none of your top ten could ever exist.
