My column this week is about the clever wheezes that private equity funds deployed to ensure that they keep control of companies they bought even in a downturn. Tony James, president of Blackstone, thinks this is good for society; I am not so sure. You can read it here and comment below.

  1. Clever wheezes - nicely put!

But President Medvedev of Russia attacks the USA outright.

In his speech to open the Economic Forum in St Petersburg, the new Russian president said the USA is responsible for the financial crisis….
He proposes to organize a conference in Russia this year on “questions of finance”, which could become a regular rendez-vous.

The USA will elect a new president in November, and whoever he may be, he is sure to find himself tested early on by more criticism and open challenges from politicians and leaders
outside the USA. Maybe the a.m. full frontal attack from Medvedev is a portent of things to come?
