What is Fashion’s Night Out really about?

Tonight is the beginning of what is being billed as the biggest Fashion’s Night Out ever, although it’s more like Fashion’s Afternoon Out: a noon-9pm (Saturday) shopping extravaganza in Japan launched by an evening pre-shopping gala, with some of the proceeds presumably going to benefit earthquake relief efforts. But that’s not the half of it.

Hong Kong’s last retail frontier

In the category of ingenious solutions to seemingly intractable problems, I nominate Raphael le Masne de Chermont, executive chairman of Shanghai Tang, who turned a piece of really bad luck – being kicked out of the building where Shanghai Tang was founded in 1994, and where its flagship was established, with less than six months notice – into a creative retail opportunity. Read more
