Yesterday, in one of the more oblique resignations I’ve ever seen, designer Ann Demeulemeester announced she was leaving the brand Ann Demeulemeester, which she founded in 1986. She left a handwritten note, structured kind of like a poem, which I’m going to reproduce in full because – well, because I’ve never seen anything like it. In both its form and the fact that no one saw this coming, it makes for a pretty stark contrast with the gossip-ridden whispers and conspiracy theories that have recently surrounded other changes of designer. Oooooh those PPR folks are making the gossip waters churn. Today reports say NY hipster designer Alexander Wang is the top candidate for the artistic director job (artistic director, creative director, designer – does no one else wish these companies would regularise their titles?), while rumours are that Christopher Kane, the erstwhile favourite for that spot, is actually being looked at in the context of buying his eponymous brand! Good gosh and golly. Two young designers at once! Both would be surprising moves, however, seems to me.
September is both Back to School! and Back to Fashion Week!, and sic discussion with my children about what they are looking forward to, I’ve been mulling over what Iam looking forward this fashion season, which begins in NY on Thursday.
