Club activities and the upcoming MBA fair

The trimester is in full gear and that means the library is now my official second place of residence. As I sit here on this lovely Sunday you would think they were giving away something judging by the attendance. This week was particularly busy and as I’ve got my first wave of exams and deliverables not far around the corner it is time to buckle down and focus.

On Friday we had our biannual club day, which can be overwhelming for the first time students because of the sheer magnitude of clubs and organisations that are on campus. My general recommendation is to do your research and pick a few and get involved.

I am a chair in the Management and Consulting association, so on Friday I was busy trying to recruit new members and let them know all about the club. We’ve got a lot of good projects this trimester and a strong executive team so I’m really looking forward to what is on tap.

I then had a reunion with my spring class, as most had been away for the summer doing internships and we are all now into our separate focus area courses. It was good to see everyone again in one place as the sheer time spent with them last trimester has made for a tight-nit group. After that, I went to a belated Mexico bicentennial fiesta put on by a Mexican classmate, replete with piñatas, sombreros, cerveza and of course tequila.

As for the coming week, I am attending an MBA recruiting conference in Los Angeles later this week so my time is even more pressed. For the last few weeks I have been busy researching, networking and applying to my desired list of companies and have had some positive traction thus far, so here’s to a successful trip to LA.

Now that my courses are beginning to take shape I am especially enjoying business intelligence, defined in the syllabus as the systematic collection, synthesis and analysis of actionable information on a company’s external operating environment. As I am particularly interested in strategy and how it relates to change management and operational efficiency, the tools we are learning in this class will be indispensible.

In a few weeks, we will get our client projects and I am looking forward to putting the tools we are learning into practice. I’ve got my eye on one project in particular so wish me luck.

Also, I find out this week if I have been accepted into Leadership EDGE programme, an extracurricular programme that helps refine leadership skills through self assessment and workshop activities. And I will also be told this week if I have been chosen as a campus ambassador; my mentor was extremely helpful in lifting the fog on the whole MBA process for me and it would be nice to be able to do the same for the next generation.

Oh, and there is all that school work as well. I’ve got a lot on my plate but wouldn’t have it any other way.
