The term of Ben Bernanke, the chairman of the Federal Reserve, expires on Sunday and it is, as yet, unclear who will take the helm of the Fed if he is not confirmed by the Senate before the end of the month. So where does he stand on the Tuesday before his term ends?

Bernanke’s chances according to his intrade futures contract: 94.9 per cent (well above the 65.1 per cent level he briefly sunk to briefly last week)
Newspaper endorsements: Yes – FT, Washington Post, USA Today, Los Angeles Times, Chicago Tribune. No – Wall Street Journal. Maybe – (New York Times – though this is from back in August, well before columnist Paul Krugman’s “Yes” op-ed).
