Sweeping up after the games

A fleet of rather old-fashioned cleaners are keeping London Bridge station in tip-top shape over the Olympic period. We spoke with one on Friday morning.

Is this your first London Olympics or were you here in ’48?

Ah, yes, the Austerity Games. I remember those well. But we weren’t working – they couldn’t afford us.

Are you working for Transport for London, then?

We’re helping out Network Rail. We had an SOS and we came as quickly as we could. We said, ‘We apologise for the delay. We apologise for any inconvenience caused.’ That’s the language they understand.

And you’re all called George. Do any of you have surnames?

No. Well – George, if you must.
