A Syrian woman enters a partially destroyed building in the northern Syrian city of Aleppo on April 9, 2013. The UN is hiking its estimates of people trapped in Syria after fleeing their homes, saying some four million are now displaced inside the country and in dire need of international help.
The UN High Commissioner for Refugees said last month the number of registered refugees had exceeded 1m. That is apart from the estimated 2m Syrians internally displaced by the fighting and the unknown thousands that have melted into the population of neighbouring countries.
