Turkish soldiers gather around a bonfire in Mursitpinar in the Sanliurfa province near the border with Syria on Monday. Islamic State group jihadists battling for control of the Syrian town of Kobane (Ain al-Arab) suffered some of their heaviest losses yet in 24 hours of clashes and US-led air strikes, monitors said. At least 50 jihadists were killed in the embattled border town in suicide bombings, clashes with Kobane's Kurdish defenders and air strikes, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.

General Honore Traore, the head of Burkina Faso’s armed forces, took power on Friday after Compaore resigned amid mass demonstrations against an attempt to extend his 27-year rule in the West African country.

Members of the army rescue unidentified trekkers from the Thorung La mountain pass on the Annapurna Circuit, near Muktinath, in Mustang district, Nepal, 17 October 2014. In total seven dead bodies of trekkers including from Poland, Israel, China and Nepal have been brought to Kathmamdu over the past 24 hours, however the search operation continues for trekkers who went missing in a snowstorm, triggered by Cyclone Hudhud which brought heavy snowfall, which has so far claimed to lives of 29 people, though dozens remain unaccounted for.
