In August 2012 three members of Russian feminist punk-rock band Pussy Riot, Yekaterina Samutsevich, Maria Alyokhina and Nadezhda Tolokonnikova, were sentenced to two years in prison on charges of hooliganism motivated by religious hatred after singing a song in the Christ the Savior cathedral in Moscow in February 2012 ahead of presidential elections in Russia.
