Authorities had deployed riot police and used bulldozers to demolish the huts set up by pro-democracy protesters when they had camped in the square to demand a regime change in 2011. These temporary shelters had not been removed from the square after protesters vacated it last year. It was not immediately apparent who had set the demolished huts on fire.
