François Hollande, French president, introduces his delegation to South Africa’s President Jacob Zuma during a summit between the two leaders in Pretoria. France has agreed to lend €100m to South African state power utility Eskom to help it finance solar power projects in Africa’s largest economy, according to a communiqué. The deal will be signed as a part of the summit.

Ninety-five children release 95 balloons outside the Mediclinic Heart Hospital, Pretoria, after praying for Nelson Mandela, former president of South Africa, to mark his upcoming 95th birthday. Mr Mandela is being treated for a recurring lung infection. Family members and President Jacob Zuma visited Mr Mandela in the hospital on Thursday.
