Martyrs Day is marked annually on 09 April to honor those who defied the French rule. On 09 April 1938, a popular leader of the Neo-Destour (New Constitution) Party was arrested sparking wide-spread protests that were suppressed by French policemen killing at least 22 and injuring some 150 others.
