Actors take part in street theatre organized by the Coordinator of NGO’s of the Basque Country in Bilbao. The organization, an umbrella group for 84 Basque NGO’s, performed Quien es Quien (Who’s Who), an improvised theatrical piece, dressed as bankers, the wealthy and military personnel, handing out fake money to motorists and passers-by. The action was designed to draw attention to what the coordinator claims are the causes of poverty and inequality in the world.

OvidiuRo, a Romanian non-governmental organisation co-founded by Leslie Hawke, the mother of US actor Ethan Hawke, is attempting to get Roma children to regularly attend pre-school through a coupon incentive system for food. Between 400 and 500 Roma live in squalour at Ponorata, few have access to electricity and 95 per cent are illiterate and unemployed. Many Roma from Ponorata have spent time in France to earn money, mostly through begging and scrap metal collection.
Munduruku Indians gather in front of the Planalto Palace in Brasilia, Brazil. Five indigenous tribes are calling for legislation giving them consultation rights prior to any official decision regarding the construction of the Belo Monte dam that would affect them. The dam, which is being built at a cost of $13bn, is expected to flood an area of 500sq km along the Xingu River, displacing 16,000 people, according to the government. Some non-governmental organisations have estimated that about 40,000 people would be displaced by the huge project. Indigenous groups say the dam will harm their way of life, while environmentalists warn of deforestation, greenhouse gas emissions and irreparable damage to the ecosystem
