Firefighters and local residents struggle on Tuesday to tackle raging wildfires that have consumed large swathes of forest in Portugal and Spain and cost the lives of four emergency workers.

Several hundred firefighters, backed by two Spanish Canadair planes, were tackling forest fires raging in the north and centre of the country. Portugal has sought help from Spain and France. Some 31,000 hectares have been lost to fire in Portugal this year

Media reports citing a spokesman for the National Fire Coordination Centre state that more that 200,000 hectares of forest have been burnt by wildfires this year after months of severe drought. According to the media reports there has already been several casualties of the fires.
