A Pakistani army soldier guards election material provided to polling agents for Saturdays elections, in Islamabad, Pakistan. An especially violent spate of killings, kidnappings and bombings marred the run-up to Pakistan’s nationwide election, capped on Thursday by the abduction of the son of a former prime minister as he was rallying supporters on the last day of campaigning before the historic vote.

Somali policemen keep an eye out for suspicious activity at a checkpoint in the country’s capital Mogadishu. Security in Mogadishu has been tightened following an attack on the country’s Supreme Court by al Shabaab on April 14 and multiple checkpoints have been set up around the city by the Somali Police Force as a result.
