South African residents of Masiphumelele assist firemen to extinguish a blaze that devastated parts of the informal shack settlement in Cape Town. Several shacks were destroyed in the fire which quickly spread in the overpopulated and dense shack settlement.

More than 3,500 residents living in informal settlements in the city have been displaced due to heavy rains, flooding and gale force winds. Many of the settlements are in low and wetland areas that have little drainage and flood easily.
