A Happy New Year to all owners of Zune 30 MP3 players – you may finally be able to use them again.
Microsoft issued a support note on New Year’s Eve after hundreds if not thousands of users found their Zune’s freezing at the same time.
Microsoft has isolated the cause to a Y2K8 bug – the model’s internal clock driver has had difficulty handling the leap year.
The company’s solution is to simply let the battery drain and wait until New Year’s Day before restarting and syncing with a computer again.
The gadget site Gizmodo first raised awareness of the problem, which Zune users referred to as Z2K9.
The bug apparently only affects owners of the 2006 30Gb version of the Zune, according to Microsoft support.
