Tap Tap is Top App

The Guitar Hero of the iPhone appears to be Tapulous’s Tap Tap Revenge.

The rhythm game has been downloaded by 32 per cent of users of Apple’s App Store for the iPhone and iPod touch, according to the comScore research firm.

It is the number-one application in the US in comScore’s first survey of App Store app penetration. Twelve out of the 25 most popular apps are games, including Namco’s Pac-man and SGN’s iBowl.

Tap Tap Revenge is a free music game where users tap through beats or shake to the left and right according to the arrows that appear. Tapulous makes money with custom editions such as a $5 Coldplay version.

Other top ten apps include Facebook, MySpace, Google Earth and Pandora.

Brian Jurutka, comScore vice president, said Tapulous had shown a small company could attract a higher penetration among Apple app users than those of larger and more established brands.

“Since the number of app users is growing nearly 10 per cent each month, that opportunity will only continue to grow for both existing and emerging app developers,” he said.

Apple had sold 30m iPhone and iPod touch units by the end of last year. ComScore’s survey covered app penetration to the end of February.
