Ford is starting to step on the gas in opening up its Sync in-car platform to application developers.

On Tuesday, it announced Sync AppLink, a software program that will allow drivers to access and control apps on their Android and BlackBerry smartphones through voice commands and vehicle controls. Pandora internet radio, Stitcher radio and Twitter client OpenBeak will be the first Sync-enabled apps, available later this year.

Mobile and fixed-line operators have shown little interest in improving the voice quality of phone calls, but the internet phone company Skype came out with a compelling reason for them to do so on Monday.

Speaking at the eComm conference in Silicon Valley, Jonathan Rosenberg, Skype‘s chief technology officer, said its users were talking for almost 50 per cent longer on calls delivered in high-definition quality.
