As lines began to form for the iPhone 4 outside Apple stores on Wednesday, Motorola and Verizon Wireless tried to steal a little of the limelight with their unveiling of the next-generation Droid X.
However, the new smartphone seems more of a competitor to another Android phone – the HTC Evo, sold by Sprint.
It has the same 4.3-inch screen, on-screen keyboard, 8 megapixel camera with dual-LED flash, and HD video capability, although it lacks the second, front-facing camera of the Evo for video conferencing.
Next to my Evo, the X is slightly longer, but feels a little easier to grip with a concave curve to the back, near the top of the phone.
The X features some well-conceived software – including “coverflow” stroking through photos and the built-in ability to stitch together photos into a panoramic shot.
Pricing is the same – $200 after a $100 mail-in rebate – and monthly plans are also similar.
