When Zediva’s founders briefed me pre-launch on their innovative new online DVD rental service last week, my main concern was whether it could “scale” robustly to cope with thousands of users. Despite their assurances, it seems the answer is it can’t, at least for now. The site was closed to new users within a few hours of its launch on Wednesday and existing users like me are having problems accessing the movie rentals.

The announcement of the Nintendo DS in 2004 was greeted with some scepticism for its two-screen gaming gimmickry, but 145m unit sales later it is the best selling handheld console of all time. Now Nintendo is launching its successor, the 3DS, with not just dual screens but dual images to add a 3D effect to games. This week’s Personal Technology column in the FT’s Business Life section is sceptical about the 3D element of the console but approving of several other new features on the device.

Tech news from around the web:

  • Apple has changed its inventory management policy for iPad 2 deliveries, Apple Insider reports. The company’s retail outlets are now holding on to new shipments until the next day rather than selling them on the same day in an effort to ease the sales process for both customers and employees.
