Buried under the avalanche of Apple announcements this week was the one that got the mobile operators pretty excited: an innovation that lets people use a WiFi connection rather than mobile signal to make calls.

On the face of it – like much of Apple’s news – it seems an old idea, with various services already on offer that allow people to make calls using WiFi. Three, the smallest UK mobile group, launched a service called InTouch this summer, while Telefonica’s O2 has offered TuGo for some time.

But, again like many of the advances unveiled this week, it is just being done better by the Cupertino-based technology group. Read more >>

Xiaomi’s latest flagship smartphone looks much like Apple’s rival handsets except for one crucial difference: the price – which is less than half that of the similarly metallic iPhone 5s from the US group.

The steel handset was unveiled in Beijing by chief executive Lei JunLei on Tuesday, with reports that the crowd murmured “iPhone” as it was unveiled. Hugo Barra, the Google executive who joined Xiaomi as global vice-president last year, was also at the event. Read more >>

Deutsche Telekom investors like the idea of selling its US mobile business much more than shareholders in the putative buyer, with shares in Japan’s Softbank down almost as much as those of the German telecoms group are up this morning.

As Telecoms correspondent Dan Thomas writes, weekend reports revived the prospect of a bid for T-Mobile USA by Sprint, which is 80 per cent owned by Softbank, although without coming to any conclusions about whether it would happen this time. Read more >>

Mobile operators have warned that customers shouldn’t expect to easily buy an iPhone 5s when it goes on sale this weekend – but there will be plenty of the cheaper multi-hued 5c model lying around for the casual Apple fan.

The next move in the race for dominance of the lucrative smartphone market has been made by Samsung, after the Korean electronics group unveiled the latest incarnation of its best-selling Galaxy range in London.

The Galaxy SIII comes with a host of innovations and gimmicks – such as multitasking functions and a high definition screen – that Samsung will hope will be enough to take further customers away from the dominant iPhone range made by Apple. Read more >>
