To paraphrase an old joke: Microsoft may be getting paranoid, but that doesn’t mean Google isn’t out to get it.

As we report today, the software company has warned European regulators that their latest attempt to limit the chilling effects of the Windows monopoly will have the counter-productive effect of reinforcing Google’s dominance of search. (The argument: if Microsoft is forced to include the Opera, Firefox and Chrome browsers with Windows, it will actually weaken competition in search, since all three default to the Google search engine.)

This looks like a shameless attempt to turn the tables by playing on the growing angst about a Google-opoly. But is there any substance to the Microsoft browser claim? Read more
