This weekend’s obituaries of Joe Frazier have reminded me that I am right to be nostalgic about that great decade – the 1970s. As many writers have noted, boxing has never been remotely as exciting as during the Ali-Frazier-Foreman era.
And boxing is not the only sport that enjoyed its golden era in the 1970s. The two greatest teams to play in the football World Cup were, I think, Brazil in 1970 and the Holland side of 1974 (even though they lost). The recent Rugby World Cup was also a reminder that international rugby badly needs a brilliant Welsh side. The last time that happened was in the 1970s. And it was in 1973 that the “greatest try ever scored” was notched up by Gareth Edwards. Check it out here.
