I know that it is bad to speak ill of the dead. But Gore Vidal never hesitated to speak ill of anyone. So let me just say that I think the reaction to his death is a little over the top. Yes, he wrote some good novels and essays and he could be entertaining. But the coverage of his death on the BBC this morning was ludicrously reverential.

Will Gompertz, the BBC’s Arts editor, called Vidal “a literary, political and intellectual heavyweight of global stature”. That is just ridiculous. Vidal was an arrogant conspiracy-theorist, trading off a reputation he made with novels written decades ago. Read more
