Catch 22: Skype edition

Well, Megan finally talked me into Skype. I have never seen the point: almost all my calls are from a mobile phone.

“It’s great for calling home from far-flung hotel rooms,” she said. Aha - now that IS a good idea. And, since I am writing this in Australia, timely advice as well.

Alas, one thing you cannot seem to do with Skype is buy credit from a hotel, because of the way most hotels access the internet. Consipracy, or cock-up? In this case, surely a cock-up. I hearby award Skype a Stupid Point and my glorious relationship with them as a paying customer will have to wait. Perhaps a very long time.

  1. I use Vyke. Never had that problem with them, and besides they’re much cheaper than Skype, and let you use any software smartphone, not only their own.

  2. Well you can buy credit before you go the hotel or even have it set up to automatically to top up if you balance reaches a certain point. I don’t think the majority of people use it for calls from hotel rooms. I assume you are not very tech savy if you are only using skype now. I am not sure I understand your point either - just because you use a mobile / cell phone - there is no reason to use skype? I think it very likely that in the future you will use skype on your mobile via wireless networks.

  3. Why don’t you try Rebtel. That way you are not required to use a internet connection, but can call overseas cheaply with you regular cell phone.
