I take my hat off to Labour.
The party machine has done an incredible job at massaging expectations of the Glenrothes by-election (result later tonight).
Yes, the SNP took the area for the Scottish Parliament last year. But this is a Westminster seat which Labour held in May 2005 with a huge majority. It took 19,395 votes (52 per cent) against the SNP’s 8,731 (23 per cent). It is also adjacent to the prime minister’s constituency.
Somehow the punditry has been persuaded that Labour is the underdog and it will lose by a margin of about 1,500.
Anything better than this would supposedly be good news for the party of the red rose. How so exactly?
