Interesting to see Sion Simon quitting as MP for Erdington. Simon is stepping down as a junior minister this month and leaving at election time.
The 41-year-old said he wants to spend more time in his constituency and lobbying to become Birmingham’s first elected mayor.
It’s curious that Simon, a loyal Brownite who was involved in the anti-Blair coup of 2006, would want to leave his seat, where he has a majority of 9,575.
After all, the last attempt to get a Birmingham mayor – the local newspaper ran a campaign to get a referendum only two years ago – ended in failure.
Which party has promised to have 10 elected mayors across the UK? Er, the Conservatives. Is Simon accidentally predicting a Tory victory?
