Gordon Brown has just announced outside 10 Downing Street (I was there, behind the iron bars listening on a radio, somewhat bathetically) that he will step down at the autumn conference but not back any specific candidate. He said he wanted to stay to oversee talks about political reform. But the far from triumphant end to Brown’s political journey is now in sight. Am told that the cabinet is gathering at 6pm.
