Archbishop compares banking crisis to Catholic church scandal

My colleague Megan Murphy reports in this morning’s FT about a gathering of bankers at Mansion House yesterday to discuss “values and trust in the City”.

This is the standout quote:

It was an unexpected sound bite from the Archbishop of Westminster, Vincent Nichols, comparing the banking crisis to the Roman Catholic Church’s own paedophile priest scandal that brought home just how badly the industry’s reputation has been damaged by the financial crisis.

You can just about see his point: that the bad actions of a small minority can damage the good work of many others. But is it really an appropriate comparison to make?
